Vintage Oak Chest of Drawers / Vanity Dressing Table
Solid Tiger Oak. Circa 1910/1920 – Original Hardware – Original Mirror – 3 Graduating Drawers -Restored & Painted By Hand
Made from solid oak Circa 1910s-1920s, with the classic tiger oak grain (quarter sawn), which was highly popular around this time, stemming from the Arts & Crafts movement of the 1880s.
As with all the pieces I restore and refinish, this piece is solid! A testament to its original craftsmanship from the dovetail joints on all 3 drawers to the original copperised cast iron handles still fully functioning!
Whilst cleaning and polishing the handles I discovered the British Registered Design Number on the back of the bottom right handle RD579216, so I checked the records and can confirm the design of these handles were patented in 1911! So they are potentially 109 years old….I think they can be forgiven for having some authentic patina, wear and tear! The middle drawer left handle does have a few lumps and bumps from the casting process, therefore, it’s not as flawless as the others but I feel this add’s to it’s vintage manufactured charm. As they are the original handles I took extra care to ensure each handle was returned to it’s original location after cleaning, retaining it’s authenticity.
As soon as I knew the handles were copperised it was an instant and easy colour choice for the paint! A luxurious dark navy, Deep Sea by Silk Mineral Paint. I knew this colour would also compliment the oak and darker areas of tiger grain. The painted areas have been sealed with a Satin Finish Top Coat to add a subtle sheen and extra durability. As with any hand painted furniture care should be taken, particularly with sharp implements, hot/cold drinks and water spillages. The best way to dust and clean these pieces of furniture is with a soft, clean, dry microfibre duster. No cleaning product is needed.
The original finish on this piece was a very dark stain, hiding the beautiful natural wood grain. In keeping with my style and the essence of ‘Chalk & Grain’ I sanded back the drawers, top and parts of the mirror stand to tie the whole ‘redesign’ together. The top did have a small split due to wood shrinkage over the years so I have sympathetically restored this which can be seen in the photos, it’s very subtle. The bare wood areas have been nourished in Fiddes Supreme Furniture Wax in Clear, this was to retain as much of the natural colour as possible, protect it and give it a soft smooth finish. Similarly to the painted areas, a clean, dry, microfibre duster can be used to clean and re-buff the sheen.
The intricate details on the handle back plates inspired me to add the stencilling details to the top drawer. Keeping it subtle but adding a little extra flare to highlight its elegant beauty. The internals of all 3 drawers have also been given an upgrade with navy wood grained vinyl liners.
As you would expect with a dresser of this age, the mirror has some minor chips and patina. I have tried to show these as best as possible in the photos without getting my reflection in the picture haha! These chips are reflected in the price of this piece…no pun intended!
Overall Height with Mirror: 160cm
(Height Of Drawers without the Mirror and Upstand: 85cm)
Every part of this dresser has been lovingly and thoroughly cleaned, sanded, primed, hand painted, hand stencilled, sealed, waxed and buffed, all by hand….my hands! I take great pride and pleasure in my hand craftsmanship, ensuring my refinished products are of a very high standard and a testament to their original creators and craftsman.
I am a true romanticist when it comes to furniture revival. Provided they do not affect the structural integrity or serviceability of a piece, I take great care to retain any marks of history, wear and tear, allowing the quirky character and bespoke individuality of a piece to shine through…..We all have our flaws and imperfections, that’s what makes us beautifully unique!
So, I have to be honest, if you are searching for something new and mass-produced then I’m pretty confident my pieces are not what you’re looking for. I would rather be open & honest and I’m always happy to send additional photos or videos of pieces if you would like more info.
