Mid Century Modern Accent Chair Yellow Botanical Japandi Pattern Velvet Fabrict – Saved & Upcycled by TGLP
I have named this beautiful chair ‘Ikigai’ for two reasons. Firstly, and most obviously, because the fabric I used to re-upholster the cushions reminds me of a traditional Japanese print: with richly pigmented yellows and dark reds, and its vintage, textured, hand-drawn quality. Secondly, because the word ‘Ikigai’, in Japanese describes the reason for being, the reason for getting up in the morning, a motivating force… And for me that’s This Great Little Place. This job, if you can call it that, is exactly what I imagine myself getting up for, every morning for the rest of my life.
As gorgeous as the timeless pattern of this mustard velvet fabric is, with its Ginkgo leaves and mimosa branches, the frame is the star of the show here. Clean lines, gorgeous hardwood, incredibly detailed joins, sturdy structure, extra-wide and super comfortable seat. It truly is a fabulous example of vintage furniture design.
This chair will fool you to think she’s from the 60s but, as you can see from the makers’ stamp, she’s an 80s child in fact.
Ikigai must have had a real fun life because she was a little battered when I got her… but the frame has been carefully cleaned, restored, oiled and waxed; the cushions have been stripped off of their ghastly blue and red, bus-grade fabric ( it was acceptable in the 80s, right? ) to make room for brand new cotton wadding and the gorgeous velvet fabric.
I’ve included a ‘before’ picture as some may like to see the transformation.
Restored & Upcycled with a lot of love and using quality materials including:
Parr’s Danish Oil, which is natural, organic, and voc-free.
Annie Sloan’s furniture wax mixed in with Sandalwood essential oil for its pleasant scent.
‘Victoria’ velvet upholstery fabric by Studio InkFabrik and cotton wadding both purchased from Fabric Galore.
I refurbish to a high standard, with incredible attention to detail and aim to provide honest photographs and descriptions, but please remember that this is a vintage upcycled piece and will therefore have small imperfections which do not affect its purpose or use. In this case, Ikigai is in great conditions – but there are a few small signs of wear which are shown in the photos. This chair meets the 1988 safety regulations by inclusion of a fire resistant interliner. Measurements, makers’ stamp, and signs of wear attached as a photos.
